The closing ceremony of the project « Promoting heritage resources in Kilwa to strenghten social and economic development » took place in Kilwa Masoko on the Friday 26th of August 2016, with the participation of Mrs Franca Berthomier, attaché for cooperation at the French Embassy to Tanzania, Mr Hans-Juergen Scheck, Head of Finance and Contracts at the European Union Delegation, Mr Bruno Bessaguet, Vice-Chairman of the French urban community of Rochefort Océan and Mr Thierry Joffroy, Chairman of the French NGO CRAterre.
This project, funded by the EU and the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Development, started in 2013. It aimed at strengthening the local stakeholders in the fields of sustainable tourism development and of promotion of cultural and natural heritage. The compilation and publication of a catalogue indexing the touristic assets and sites of Kilwa, the construction of an information centre with local materials and the training of 6 local guides were among the activities implemented.
This project relied on the very rich natural and cultural heritage of Kilwa, like the ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and the abundant local biodiversity, to promote sustainable tourism and create new economic opportunities for the local population.
It was implemented by the French NGO CRAterre, in partnership with the township of Kilwa, the district of Kilwa, the urban community of Rochefort Océan (France). This project based on the cooperation between local authorities from France and Tanzania was a unique opportunity for exchanges of expertise between the teams of both countries.
