Franco-Tanzanian Workshop on professional training

The Economic Department of the French Embassy and the Research institution Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) have organised a franco-tanzanian workshop on professional training on June 29th 2016 at ESRF Conference Hall in Dar Es Salaam.

The Ambassador or France to Tanzania, H.E. Malika Berak and the Executive Director of ESRF, Dr. Tausi Kida, have launched the workshop with Dr. Reginald Mengi, Chairman of the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF). The government was represented by Mr. Ally Msaki, Director of employment at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The workshop has brought together nearly an hundred people from various backgrounds : international organizations (African Development Bank, International Labor Office), NGOs (VSO, Twaweza), public institutions (Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication, Ministry of industry, ministry of energy and minerals, REPOA, Uongozi Institute, COSTECH, Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization (TIRDO), Tanzania National Business Council, Mzumbe University, Confederation of Tanzania Industries).

Following to the new National Skills Development Strategy 2016-2021 established by the government, the workshop has been a good opportunity for the private sector and the Tanzanian institutions to exchange on the ways to strengthen human capital, a key issue in Tanzania, notably through thematic group discussions.

H.E. Ms Malika BERAK

This workshop was more specifically about on-the-job-training, and operational actions to implement in order to ensure the adequation of skills to the needs of the private sector, and the sustainable financing of the training system. The discussions were organised around 4 experts from the French Agency for Professional training (AFPA), coming from France. Representatives from French companies (Bolloré, CMA-CGM) and the French Development Agency (AFD) have presented their experience and the solutions they have developed in order to fill the skills gaps they were facing. Tanzanian companies such as Superdoll and Bakhresa also shared their views on this critical issue.

The outcome of these discussions will be formalised into a policy paper for the public authorities. The experts from AFPA have pursued their mission with be to be program, with the Tanzanian public institutions and companies interest.
