Press release : work visit of the French Minister Mr. Jean-Marc Ayrault

Mr. Jean-Marc Ayrault, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, came to Dar es Salaam for a work visit on the 2nd of August.

This trip was the opportunity for consultations with the Tanzanian government appointed following the election of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. John Pombe Magufuli in October2015.

Mr. Jean-Marc Ayrault met with his counterpart, Mr. Augustine Mahiga, Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation. The talks covered the old and strong bilateral relations that France and Tanzania maintain. Tanzania’s role in favor of peace and security on the African continent was at the centre of the discussions. Jean-Marc Ayrault highlighted Tanzania’s constant commitment to the research of regional solutions to the Great Lakes conflicts. He paid tribute to Tanzania’s reception of tens of thousands of Burundian refugees fleeing the crisis in their country. The fight against terrorism was also mentioned.

The two ministers welcomed the development of the cooperation between France and Tanzania: the Agence Française de Developpement (AFD), operator of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, supports projects in the strategic sectors of energy, water and sanitation and transports, by setting up concessional loans. Its operations aim to improve the daily life of the population but also to accompany the industrial development of Tanzania. Thus, it will contribute to the rehabilitation of the Terminal 2 of the Dar es Salaam International Airport. The AFD, which dedicates 50 million euros on average per year to Tanzania, should double its concessional funding in its favor in the near future.

Mr. Jean-Marc Ayrault was also received by the ex-President, Mr. Benjamin Mkapa, named facilitator of the inter-Burundian dialogue by the East-African Community. He reiterated France’s full support to the efforts he puts in place to mobilize all parties to find a way out of the Burundian crisis, in conformity with the Arusha agreements.

Mr. Jean-Marc Ayrault met with representatives of the French companies in Tanzania. He underlined the importance of their actions in job creation and transfer of technologies, expertise input and contribution to the reinforcement of national capacities in sectors crucial to its development: engineering, water, finances, telecommunications… The economic partnership between France and Tanzania is called to be developed even more thanks to the investments of French companies.

Mr. Jean-Marc Ayrault ended his stay by visiting the port of Dar Es Salaam, key economic driver of the country and entry door for business in the region. French companies are mobilized to participate in the development of the maritime and lake transport sector, which is essential for the exchanges between the countries of the region.
