Throwback on the Night of Ideas at Alliance Française of Dar es Salaam [fr]

This debate took place in the framework of “The Night of Ideas” (La Nuit des Idées), an initiative from the French Institute that is celebrated since 2016 all around the world. Every year, on the evening of the last Thursday of January, French and International voices gather on all five continents to discuss major challenges of our century. This year, conferences, forums, exhibitions and artistic performances are organized around one common theme, which is “Facing the present”

PNG

For the first time this year, the Embassy of France to Tanzania has joined this initiative. The event was launched at the Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam with the documentary “Oceans, the mystery of the missing” from the French Director Vincent Perazio. The documentary led to an interactive discussion between the public and five panelists from all sectors (public, private, research community and civil society) sharing their expertise on plastic waste management and pollution.

Alongside the debate, an exhibition of upcycling projects from Mabaki Mali, Arena Recycling and Tengeneza Generation allowed the public to learn about successful initiatives taken by local private businesses and NGOs to recycle plastic waste.

In the morning of the same day, the Embassy of France to Tanzania facilitated a round of discussions with children at the French School in Dar es Salaam. Practical activities were organized to facilitate their awareness-raising: the NGO Tengeneza Generation joined to show products made from waste recycling and a group of children, with the support of their craft teacher, invested one of the walls at the Alliance Française to create an artistic representation of plastic waste pollution.

The Embassy of France is proud to launch this event for the first time in Tanzania, which will be the first of a series in 2019, related to environment protection and climate change.
