Applying for a French visa in Tanzania

Visa applications submitted in Tanzania are processed by the French Embassy in Dar es Salaam.

Important information notice from Schengen Member States

According to the Schengen visa code, the validity of a travel document should extend at least three months (90 days) after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen Member States.

From the 20th February 2020, according to an official notification from the Tanzanian authorities issued to all diplomatic missions, only the new East African Community (EAC) biometric e-passports can be accepted for Schengen visa applications..

The main steps in applying for a visa

Do I need a visa?

Complete your application online

PNG Once you have confirmed that you need a visa, you can complete your application on our online portal. You will be asked to create a France-Visas account, which you will need for each step of the process.

Submit your application to the visa centre

PNG Once you have completed your online application, all you have to do is submit it at the French Embassy.

Waiting times for appointments and for processing applications will vary depending on your nationality and the time of year.

Users are therefore asked to submit their visa applications well in advance of their departure date.
It is strongly recommended to book as early as possible - keeping in mind that you cannot apply more than three months prior to your departure date.
APPLICANTS HAVE TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT BETWEEN THREE MONTHS AND FOUR WEEKS BEFORE THE INTENDED DEPARTURE.

General Information

All foreign nationals wanting to come to France must be able to submit statutory documentary evidence at the border for the reasons for their stay, their means of support and accommodation arrangements.
As a rule, unless you are exempt, you are required to have a visa. The applicant must apply at the relevant French embassy or consulate in their country of residence.

With 9 new countries joining it on January 1st, 2008 (Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovaquia, Slovenia), the Schengen area now gathers 24 member states, including UE-member states (Great Britain and Ireland decided not to join, Cyprus postponed its adhesion and Romania and Bulgaria are in the process of joining) as well as Norway, Switzerland and Iceland.

All Schengen visas are now biometric, which means than each applicant must come personally to apply.

If you intend to visit only one Schengen country, you must apply at the Embassy or Consulate of that country.
If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, you must apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country that is your main destination/ longest stay.
If you intend to visit several countries but do not have a main destination, you should apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country of your first point of entry.

Representation of other countries

The French embassy has authority to issue short-stay visas (less than 90 days) for the following countries:

- Schengen countries: Greece, Latvia and Czech Republic.
- African countries: Burkina Faso and Central African Republic.

Please contact the nearest Embassy of the appropriate country for any request regarding long stay visa or working permit.

Fees can only be paid in Tanzanian shillings (cash)

Nota bene
Each applicant must schedule a personal appointment.
The processing time can take up to 15 days, depending on the application.
Visa form and all the collateral documents must be submitted during the appointment, or the application will be denied.
Each applicant must come personally.
Visa fees are in Tanzanian shilling only (cash).
Visa fees are not refundable in case of cancellation or refusal.
